Love may well be in the air but it’s not necessarily online as gardai warn people about a “romance scam” that has done innocent victims out of thousands of euro.
In 2019, some 75 cases were reported where people were talking to different people to who they were led to believe they were talking to.
The scammer would use a fake profile picture then get the victim’s trust, essentially make them fall for them and then start asking for online payments to be made for travel, medical expenses or bills.
Victims have sent thousands of euro online to people they believed were in love with them. It’s understood that one poor woman ended up sending €62,000 while another man sent €50,000 to a “woman” he thought he was talking to.
