Judge Martin Nolan has spared an Indian migrant from prison after he pled guilty to attempting to abduct a five-year-old boy last year.
Business student Visak Rajesh Leela plead guilty to a charge of unlawfully attempting to take a child or cause a child to be taken or detained and has been told he has two weeks to leave the country.#
Judge Nolan, who has attracted significant criticism, including from Dublin City Councillor Gavin Pepper, for his perceived leniency in sentencing of child abusers and paedophiles, said he did not believe that Leela was a “danger to children”, reports RTE.
CCTV footage showed Leela picking up a five year old boy under his arm at an apartment complex in Dublin and an older, female child demanding he be let go.
Defending counsel Michael Kelleher argued that his client had made a mistake while “intoxicated”.
The court also imposed restrictions on the reporting the attempted child abductors address for fear of dangers he might face.
