A report recently published by HIQA in relation to St. Patrick’s Community Hospital in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim, has revealed a litany of shortcomings in patient care.

The report states that the institution failed on 12 of the 18 standards that it was tested against.

Among other failings, inspectors found that some of the older residents in the HSE-run institution had not enjoyed either a bath or a shower for a month or longer, in some cases.

The report also highlighted that the authorities responsible for the running of the institution had not addressed concerns raised by previous inspections.

The issue of shortage of staff with the right qualifications and skills was also highlighted.

It is understood that management have now pledged to take appropriate action to address all issues raised by this and previous reports within a specified timeframe.
