Scarlett Faulkner was honoured at her funeral mass today, described as “a young mother, a daughter, a lady whose life was intertwined with love, responsibility and hope,” reports RTE.

Ms Faulkner passed away after suffering severe head injuries during an assault the previous month, reports RTE.

A horse-drawn carriage bearing the coffin of the 29-year-old led the funeral procession to St Munchin’s Church, located across from the Treaty Stone.

The church aisle was adorned with cherry blossom trees, and several mourners wore pink as a tribute to the Limerick woman, reports RTE.

Canon Dónal McNamara presided over the funeral mass of Ms Faulkner, who was described as “a young mother, a daughter, a lady whose life was intertwined with love, responsibility and hope.”

He said her greatest gift is her daughter Oceanna, reports RTE.

“The love she gave, the care she showed, the moments she lived as a mother, these are not wiped out. They remain now held safely in God,” Canon McNamara said.

He said those gathered to grieve the tragic loss of Ms Faulkner “face something very difficult but never the less essential and that is the call to forgiveness,” reports RTE.

He noted that this does not mean overlooking what occurred, nor does it mean dismissing pain or excusing wrongdoing.

“Forgiveness is a journey, often long and difficult, but never the less it is a path that leads away from being consumed by anger and towards the freedom that God desires for each of us,” he said, reports RTE.

During the eulogy, her sister Victoria Faulkner expressed gratitude for the love and support shown to Scarlett.

She said: “I’ll cherish every memory we ever shared together. You were a character. You always made us laugh no matter what mood we might have been in.

“You made our bad days better. We will miss your beautiful smile and loving personality.

“You had a heart like no other. The love you showed us, we will never forget.”

“Scarlett, you have left a big hole in each and every one of our hearts,” she said, reports RTE.

“We promise you, sister, we will get the justice you deserve,” she added.

She said her family remains determined to seek justice following Scarlett’s death, reports RTE.

Scarlett Faulkner is to be laid to rest at Ballycannon cemetery in Meelick later this afternoon.
