Schoolgirl gives birth whilst babysitting and leaves her newborn baby boy in a wheelie bin

An inquest at Blackpool Town Hall has revealed that a 15 year-old schoolgirl went into labour whilst babysitting a young boy.

The girl, who cannot be named gave birth to a baby boy.

Police were alerted by staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital who became suspicious after treating the schoolgirl, for vaginal bleeding later that day, according to the Metro.

After investigations, Police found the body of a newborn baby boy in a wheelie bin wrapped in a bundle of clothes and a plastic bag at the rear of the home where she was babysitting. Police were later told that the girl thought the infant was dead when she put the baby in the wheelie bin.

Coroner Andrew Cousins asked the girl, who is now 18, whether she covered the baby’s face with the plastic bag when she wrapped him up. She replied: ‘I don’t know.’
The girl said she heard no sound from the baby and believed he was dead, though she did not check for a pulse, adding: ‘He wasn’t making any noise. He wasn’t moving at all.’

Police Officer Gareth Willis, who led the investigation into the death, told the court that on the day of the incident, the infant’s mum had made a number of internet searches, including ‘why have I got really bad stomach pains’, ‘why did blood with goo in it come from my vagina’, and ‘how to cut an umbilical cord’. He said he believed there was sufficient evidence to charge the girl, but the case was dropped following a CPS review.
