Scottish MP suspended after travelling to Westminster with Covid symptoms

An MP from the Scottish National Party has been suspended and is facing calls to resign after she travelled to the House of Commons despite showing Covid symptoms and later testing positive.

Margaret Ferrier took a Covid test last Saturday after experiencing symptoms. However, the following Monday she travelled via train to London because she claimed to be feeling ‘much better’ according to the BBC. After debating in Westminster, the MP received the news that evening that she had tested positive. This didn’t stop Ferrier from making the return train journey back to her home in Scotland, in serious breach of guidelines.

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon called her actions ‘utterly indefensible’ and has suspended her from the party. Meanwhile Ruth Davidson, the Tory leader for Scotland, said Ferrier had been ‘absolutely reckless’ in taking public transport despite testing positive.

With calls from her political allies and opponents to resign, it is likely this disastrous lapse of judgement will bring an end to Ferrier’s political career.
