Search conditions off Galway coast are said to be ‘challenging’

A man was reported missing off Oileán Mhic Dara in the Carna region of Conamara, and a large search is underway in County Galway, reports RTE.

At first light, the search for the man, who was reported missing at sea last evening, was resumed.

Several local fishing vessels are involved, as well as RNLI workers from Clifden and the Aran Islands, all under the supervision of the Irish Coast Guard.

The region between Oileán Mhic Dara and Ceann Mhása has been the focus of the search. For those concerned, things have become more difficult due to south westerly winds, reports RTE.

The missing man and his spouse are believed to have gone ashore during a sailing excursion, at which point he was last saw attempting to recover a dinghy that had drifted away from its mooring.

Just before 6 p.m. yesterday, a vessel at Oileán Máisean, a little way offshore from Carna, made a mayday call.

Since the search began, Cleggan Coast Guard troops have been conducting a drone scan and have also dispatched rescue aircraft to aid in the search, reports RTE.

An additional search along the beach is being conducted to find the missing individual.

The RNLI Clifden Lifeboat’s coxswain, James Mullen, said that while the weather “weren’t too bad” and suitable for searching yesterday, things had changed today, reports RTE.
