Simon Harris, the Taoiseach, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Defence Forces’ handling of the case of a soldier who severely attacked a woman, reports RTE.
In May 2022, Cathal Crotty entered a guilty plea to the charge of harming 24-year-old Natasha O’Brien on Limerick’s O’Connell Street.
Crotty was given a three-year suspended sentence last week for the assault that left Ms. O’Brien comatose, reports RTE.
According to the Defence Forces, internal procedures are underway after the legal procedure.
There is no place for any kind of gender-based violence, abuse, or improper conduct by Defence Forces soldiers, on or off duty, a spokeswoman for the force stated in a statement today.
“The Defence Forces unequivocally condemns any actions by serving personnel that are contrary to military regulations or that do not reflect our values. Any conviction in a civilian court has implications for the retention and service of members of the Defence Forces, as stipulated in military regulations,” he said, reports RTE.
