A search operation is underway in South Africa’s Western Cape after a number of crocodiles escaped from a breeding farm.

According to BBC News, a specialist police unit has been setup in order to catch the reptiles after they escaped from a local breeding farm in Bonnievale.

The operation has been made all the more concerning after it was revealed that breeders are unsure how many of the 4ft 11in crocodiles have escaped from the farm.

People living in the region have been warned to be extra vigilant and not to approach the reptiles if they happen to come across its path.

Police investigating the incident say 27 of the crocodiles have since been recaptured after they setup a number of bait cages along the nearby Breede river.

It is believed that the reptiles escaped the farm after they made their way through a hole in a broken fence.
