A wild duck in Co. Galway has been confirmed as the second case of avian flu in Ireland.
The animal carried the H5N8 strain, a highly pathogenic virus that can cause serious illness or death in animals. This strain is not known to infect humans, however.
So far, no cases have been detected among poultry flocks, but farmers and other staff involved in the handling of birds destined for the food chain have been asked to be vigilant.
