President Michael D Higgins is reportedly set to run for a second term in office, it has been revealed today.
According to The Irish Times newspaper President Higgins who will end his seven year term in office later this year, will once again throw his hat into the mix in the hope to retain his position and spend another seven years in the Aras.
Although the Times did not confirm when President Higgins will announce his bid, the paper did speculate that President Higgins will officially announce his stance after the upcoming referendum on the Eighth Amendment.
It is expected that President Higgins will face competition for the position as Independent senator Gerard Craughwell previously revealed his intentions to run, whilst former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and former Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly have yet to formally declare their intentions.
