Senator Catherine Noone has apologised to elderly frail priest for her social media outburst about his pro life sermon at Easter Sunday Mass

Senator Catherine Noone finally apologised for her social media outburst about an elderly priest’s Easter Sunday sermon defending unborn Irish babies in the womb.

The priest in question, well known and liked Fr. Tom Doherty publicly accepted her apology and conveyed how a respectful discourse must take place in the debate on the Eighth Amendment.

Ms Noone came under immense pressure for her tweet which she subsequently deleted. She exclaimed how an octogenarian priest spoke about being pro life at Easter Sunday Mass.

Many questioned what she was even doing in the church in Knock in the first place given her views differed so much from Catholic teaching.

Others on social media merely called it “ageist” and “an attack on an elderly priest”.

Westport-based priest Fr Charlie McDonnell, posted on social media that was saddened by what he described as an “attack” on the frail elderly priest and that “My response will be to speak on #Savethe8th ASAP,” he wrote.

The Eighth Amendment is the amendment currently protecting unborn Irish babies from abortion. The referendum to repeal or save the Eighth Amendment will take place on May 25th.
