Several cases of the plague have been confirmed across a number of counties in Colorado.
Local health authorities have confirmed that a 6-year-old girl died from the disease in recent days. This is the first known fatality from plague since 2015.
At least six other cases have been confirmed in the state.
Plague is usually transmitted by insects, typically fleas, or by contact with infected animals. The disease can be effectively treated with antibiotics, but complications might arise in individuals with comorbidities, or if treatment isn’t administered fast enough.
