As thousands of migrants continue to pour into the country, Ireland has 4,000 of its own children homeless.

The number of people in emergency shelters exceeded 12,000 for the first time.

The latest figures from the Department of Housing show that 12,259 adults and children were in shelters in April.

This is an increase of 271 from March’s figures, when 11,988 homeless people were registered.

The government lifted the winter clearance ban on April 1.

According to the latest figures, 8,665 adults and 3,594 children were in shelters last month.

Wayne Stanley, managing director of Simon Communities, said the country was shocked by the scale of the crisis.
