Shanty suburbs: Dublin City Council reject back garden log cabin proposals

Dublin City Council have rejected a plan that would have allowed people to build log cabins in their back gardens.

The proposals which were originally set out by the Council’s Planning Committee to aliviate the current housing crisis late last year, were overwhelmingly voted down at council meeting on Monday.

It is understood that a number of councillors rejected the plans citing health and safety as one of the major factors in approving the proposal.

The City Council who voted 72% against the proposal also claimed that the building of log cabins in existing gardens would be a public nuisance and would ultimately lead to a suburbs of shanties across the city.

It was originally proposed that existing homes could use their back gardens to build log cabins in order to help young people get on the property ladder.
