If Irish Water was rather unpopular before, this shocking revelation is certain to smear further dirt on the utility’s scandalous history.
According to food industry sources, expected rate hikes in the tariffs charged to public establishments for water may force restaurants and other locales to begin charging customers for tap water.
Irish Water has told businesses in no uncertain terms to expect rate increases, which in turn may be passed on to customers.
Responding to the news, Michael Kilcoyne from the Consumers’ Association of Ireland has said that getting charged for tap water is not likely to be popular with the public. He said: “I don’t think it would go down very well. It would be like charging customers for napkins.
“I’d think twice about charging for tap water.”
