Shocking: Sinn Fein TD reveals that a student nurse saw patient’s toe come off whilst washing him

Sinn Fein TD Patricia Ryan, has slammed the Government and the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly over their handling of pay for student nurses.

Speaking in Dail on Wednesday, Ryan revealed harrowing details of how one student nurse witnessed a man’s toe fall off into his sock whilst washing him.

Ryan told fellow TD’s that she has been told a number of shocking stories about the situations student nurses and Midwives face on a daily basis.

The Sinn Fein TD revealed that the nurse involved was on her own at the time of the incident and was sadly left in a situation were she had to finish washing him until she could get assistance from a nurse who then sought medical help

Ryan questioned the Minister for Health and fellow Dail TD’s saying imagine being that scenario and to imagine not getting paid for their job.

She also told the Dail that another student nurse was left alone and without any help to dress a deceased patient in order to give that person a little dignity.

Ryan’s comments come after a number of student nurses and opposition TD’s have hit out at thr Government’s decision to offer student nurses a €100 a week allowance.

The offer has also been criticised by the INMO who say the offer doesn’t represent the risks student nurses and midwives face.
