It has come to light that a Sinn Féin member quit from the organisation after reportedly sending offensive communications to a 17-yr-old, reports Breaking News.
In September 2023, Sinn Féin suspended the party member and forwarded the issue to social services and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
The Irish Independent later revealed that the member had resigned from the party.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the party said: “Sinn Féin received a complaint on September 11th, 2023 regarding messages sent by a party member to a 17-year-old member of the party. In line with the party’s child protection guidelines the person concerned was suspended. The matter was immediately referred to the PSNI and social services. On September 27th, the PSNI informed the party they were not carrying out a formal investigation into the matter and indicated support for the actions the party had taken both from their perspective and that of the young person’s family,” reports Breaking News.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the PSNI said: “In September 2023, a referral was made to Police Service of Northern Ireland by a political party. Safeguarding assessments and engagement with other statutory bodies were conducted at that time. No formal complaint from any person was received,” reports Breaking News.
