The recent sinking of the flagship Russian vessel Moskva in the Black Sea represents a crushing military and moral defeat for Vladimir Putin.
The Ukrainian military reportedly used superior tactics for the operation, first launching drones to confuse the ship’s anti-air defence systems. This ruse was followed by a missile launch using Neptune anti-ship weapons, which did not miss their target. This is the first time that Neptune missiles are used in a combat environment. The weapons’ impact caused some of the onboard munition to detonate, sparking a massive fire. Towing trawlers attempted to move the crippled vessel away from the danger zone, but the ship did not stay afloat for long.
The 12,490-tonne missile cruiser is the largest Russian warship to be sent to the bottom of the sea in military action since World War 2.
The Moskva‘s loss represents a major loss for Russia, both in moral and military terms. The ship was a symbol of Russia’s naval power and a prized asset of Vladimir Putin.
