Sinn Féin announced today that they plan to cut childcare costs for families, with a proposed cap of €180 per week.

If this is introduced, it is estimated that this could save working families up to €4,500 a year.

Sinn Féin is also promising to invest €80m into training programmes for childcare workers, emphasising the need for childcare sector funding and training.

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader, Mary Lou McDonald, spoke on the proposals and said more state funding should be allocated to the childcare sector:

“We also want to be sure that you get two free 48 week years, and that will help greatly in terms of the workers concerns.

“We also want to improve capitation rates because the state simply has to pay more to the sector to ensure that standards are right and to ensure that workers are treated correctly.”
