Sinn Fein/Fianna Fail government? McDonald accused of hypocrisy after saying she does not rule out any coalition options

Sinn Féin leader, Mary Lou McDonald has not ruled out forming a government with another party after the next general election.

Speaking to RTÉ’s The Week in Politics, she promised to speak to all parties when all the votes are counted.

However, she said the best option would be a “government for change” that does not include Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael.

Had Sinn Féin been in government after the next election, Ms McDonald promised that her party’s TDs would be “match fit” from day one to be handed out to the people.

Asked if the door would open for former Fianna Fáil TD Marc McSharry to join Sinn Féin, she said: “I’m not sure he would,” reported RTE.

Ms McDonald reiterated her party’s position that there can be no direct return to government unless an executive is formed in Northern Ireland.

She said there must be a partnership between Dublin and London that takes into account the changing political landscape in Northern Ireland.

“It is very important that Dublin is front-footed, proactive and prepared,” she said, reports RTE.

Ms. McDonald also confirmed that if her party were in power, her government would borrow more money to provide more housing.

She said that Sinn Féin had asked the government to explore and carry out a program of mortgage interest reduction “not open ended, but time bound”, to capture the part of the interest rate that is problematic for families and that banks are highly profitable to absorb. the cost.

On climate action, she said Sinn Féin will focus on getting the practicalities right rather than the goals.

“We can’t have a big State spend that ties us into fossil fuels over the longer term but we also have to make sure we can keep the lights on,” she said, reports RTE.
