Sinn Féin say they’ll announce a game-changing Presidential endorsement today

In a high-stakes move ahead of Ireland’s 2025 presidential election, Sinn Féin has confirmed it will unveil its choice for Áras an Uachtaráin on Saturday, September 20. Party leader Mary Lou McDonald teased the announcement as a “game changer” during a press briefing at the National Ploughing Championships in Co Offaly, promising to reshape the campaign and keep Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil from reclaiming the presidency.

Speculation has intensified around Sinn Féin’s deliberations, with the focus narrowing to TD Pearse Doherty and independent candidate Catherine Connolly. McDonald emphasized the endorsed figure would embody “plenty of Irish,” signalling a preference for cultural fluency that appears to side-line Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill, despite her not ruling out a run. The party has engaged Connolly’s team, hinting at a potential cross-party alliance amid talks with left-wing groups like Labour and the Greens for a unified progressive voice.

This comes as nominations close on September 24, with polling set for October 24. Sinn Féin, Ireland’s largest opposition force, wields significant influence through its councillors, who can sway local endorsements. McDonald, having ruled herself out, stressed the need for a president championing Ireland’s “values and ambitions.” MEP Lynn Boylan echoed the buzz, assuring the reveal would clarify the party’s strategy by day’s end Saturday.

As incumbent Michael D. Higgins steps down after 14 years, the race features contenders like Fianna Fáil’s Jim Gavin and Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys. Sinn Féin’s endorsement could mobilise its base, tipping the scales in a contest blending tradition and transformation.
