Sinn Fein’s Mary Lou McDonald will be nominated for Taoiseach on Thursday in the Dail

The Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald will be nominated for Taoiseach in the Dail when it sits for the first time since the election on Thursday.

It’s presumed that McDonald has absolutely no chance of receiving enough votes to actually become Taoiseach, but nonetheless, Sinn Fein will continue to try and form a left wing coalition government in the meantime.

Should they fail to form a government, the onus falls on Fianna Fail to try and get back into power – more than likely with Fine Gael and the Green Party, but it still remains anyone’s guess as to what likely coalition will actually emerge from election 2020.

Fianna Fail have completely ruled out Sinn Fein, while Fine Gael appear to have somewhat stepped back from Fianna Fail’s invitation. Thursday will be pivotal to see where everyone stands.
