A man has been jailed for wreaking havoc on a recent Ryanair flight after smuggling alcohol on board.

The three-hour flight took off from Alicante and, after landing in Newcastle, the police had to be called.

Meredith Gibbons had smuggled his own alcohol on the flight and when it was confiscated, he snuck into the galley to retrieve it and took it to the bathroom to drink.

Newcastle Crown Court heard he continually refused to comply with safety requests and the crew were so concerned that they contacted air traffic control, who contacted the police.

Gibbons’ disorderly behavior continued after landing at Newcastle International Airport, where a ground crew member had to assist a PC into subduing him.

It was around 9.30pm. on 19 November when Northumbria Police received the call to travel to the airport. Nick Lane, prosecutor, said: “He was told by a crew member the male passenger occupying seat 5A was drunk and had been disruptive throughout the flight,” reports The Mirror.

Gibbons, 35, of Osborne Terrace, Gateshead, who has 26 previous convictions, including for dishonesty and assault, pleaded guilty to being drunk on a plane and was jailed for eight weeks.

Recorder Tom Moran told him: “There’s a duty on you to behave yourself for the safety of everyone on board. You are in a unique environment where any bad behaviour is likely to cause distress and anxiety to others,” reports The Mirror.
