The Social Democrats have confirmed that Ellie Kisyombe will be a candidate for the party in the upcoming local elections after she “corrected” her back story.

The party conducted an independent review into the candidacy of Ms Kisyombe after it emerged that the harrowing back story she had given to the party and disseminated in her election literature was fiction.

Kisyombe had claimed that she lived in Direct Provision for almost 10 years, but it emerged she had actually was a student in Bristol university between 2007 and 2010, she then returned to her native Malawi before getting a student visa in Ireland, then applying for UK asylum.

The revelations led to some within the party to call for her to suspend her election campaign and cease to stand in the election while others in the party virtue signalled by threatening to leave the party if Kisyombe was not permitted to run in the elections.

The case has brought up issues surrounding illegal migration in Ireland with some in Irish media essentially calling for the abandonment of migration laws.
