There have been mixed responses on social media to the news that People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy is “not gendering” his new baby.
According to the Irish Times, Murphy named his new baby Juniper but says that he and his partner are not describing the baby as a boy, saying “we’re describing Juniper as a baby, but it is male”.
Speaking about how he doesn’t want to limit the baby’s future, he said that they would be able to decide for themselves in the future how they want to live. He also told the Irish Times that he didn’t want to label the baby as a boy or a girl and that if the baby decides at the age of three that they are a boy then that would be fine by him and that he would tell the baby “You’re free to change your opinion and you’re free to change your gender identity in the future if you want”.
Social media users have expressed varying views to Murphy’s plans, with some saying that they respect his plans. However others thought that it would be fairer to the baby to just say they are a boy or girl and that a 3-year-old would be much too young to make any decision on gender identity.
