Social media users can appeal over content disputes, such as removal of content, to new settlement body

In Dublin, there are plans to establish an independent body that will handle appeals against rulings by three of the biggest social media firms about policy violations, reports Breaking News.

Disputations from individuals and groups all throughout the European Union (EU) will be sent to Appeals Centre Europe.

With the goal of eventually including more social media sites, the body will initially consider matters pertaining to Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube.

The EU Digital Services Act’s Article 21 designates the Appeals Centre as a recognised out-of-court dispute resolution authority, which the centre has verified (DSA), reports Breaking News.

After submitting a successful application to Coimisiún na Meán, Ireland’s media authority, the certification was granted.

The Appeals Centre has obtained legal certification to offer an unbiased, prompt, and economical service that is not influenced by governments or corporations.

It will determine if the decisions made by platforms align with their content policy, taking into account any human rights-related guidelines, precepts, or exceptions, reports Breaking News.

It will use a staff of specialists from within the company, promising to “human review” each case and to include knowledge of certain geographical locations, linguistic patterns, and policy domains.

It also aims to increase social media platforms’ transparency and accountability by producing data that shows trends that point to systemic dangers.

The Appeals Centre will provide an option to the sometimes expensive and drawn-out court channels for seeking justice.

A one-time gift from the Oversight Board Trust has funded the Appeals Center’s first operations.

The body in charge of monitoring content decisions is the Oversight Board, reports Breaking News.
