A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 carrying 99 passengers and crew was forced to make an emergency landing, after an explosion disabled one of its engines in mid-flight.

The aircraft was flying from New Orleans to Orlando when the incident happened.

The crew were forced to declare an emergency and initiate a rapid descent from 31,000 feet. Pensacola was the nearest airport, and the flight landed safely there shortly afterwards.

A statement released by the airline said “Today the captain of #Flight 3472 from New Orleans to Orlando made the decision to divert to Pensacola due to a mechanical issue with the number one engine.”

The cause of the explosion remains unclear.
