Sweltering temperatures are seen in Spain, France and other western European countries, with wildfires still burning as the weather begins to calm.
The rise in temperature was in line with scientists’ predictions that such phenomena would now occur earlier in the year thanks to global warming.
The forces have fought several forest fires in northern Spain. The most alarming fire in the north-western Sierra de Culebra has destroyed more than 25,000 hectares (62,000 acres), the regional government said.
Firefighters said cooler temperatures overnight had helped them make progress fighting the blazes.
