Animals in Spain are no longer considered an “object” by law thanks to new legislation approved by Spain’s lower house, the House of Representatives.

From now on, animals are treated as “sentient beings” and, as such, have a different legal status from that of an inanimate object. In the event of divorce or separation, they can no longer be detained, abandoned, mistreated or separated from one of their owners without any consideration for their well-being and protection.
