Spain holiday horror as Irish tourists get badly beaten up by gang in late night ambush

Two Irish tourists sustained facial fractures and other injuries after being attacked by a gang of teenage muggers in a Costa del Sol holiday town, reports The Mirror.

The assault occurred in the early hours of Friday morning as the victims were returning to their hotel in Nerja, a scenic resort located about 30 miles east of Malaga, following a night of drinking.

Authorities have reportedly identified four local youths as suspects, one of whom is believed to be a minor. As of this morning, it remains unclear whether any arrests have been made by the Civil Guard, reports The Mirror.

According to respected regional newspaper Sur, the attackers brandished a knife before violently beating the tourists, robbing them of their phones and cash, and fleeing the scene.

The incident was described as so brutal that blood was left smeared on a nearby home where the attack took place. Residents reportedly contacted police after hearing cries for help, reports The Mirror.

The two Irish men, who were said to be intoxicated and therefore unable to adequately protect themselves, suffered multiple facial fractures in addition to other injuries.

They received initial treatment at a local health centre and were later transferred to hospital. As of now, the Civil Guard in Malaga has not released an official statement regarding the case, reports The Mirror.

Nerja, located at the eastern edge of the Costa del Sol, is well-known for its stunning coastline and the famous Nerja Caves, which stretch nearly five kilometres and are among Spain’s top natural attractions.

This isn’t the first incident involving Irish tourists in the area. In September of last year, a 29-year-old woman was seriously burned during a friend’s wedding in Nerja, reports The Mirror.

She sustained critical injuries after her dress caught fire from decorative candles in a bathroom. Other guests found her semi-conscious in a rental property and called emergency services.

She was initially treated in a Malaga hospital where doctors performed emergency surgery, before she was transferred to a specialist burns unit at Seville’s Virgen del Rocio University Hospital, reports The Mirror.
