Spain is our ally and friend – Varadkar announces that Ireland will not recognise Catalonian referendum vote as it deifies the constitution of Spain

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said neither he or Ireland will accept Catalonia’s recent referendum on independence, saying “Spain is an ally and friend of Ireland.”

Mr Varadkar who made is comments during the recent announcement of 250 jobs being created by technology company Veritas in Dublin, also said the referendum will not be officially recognised by Ireland and the EU as it was held illegally and defied the constitution of Spain.

Although the Taoiseach said he was deeply disturbed by the violence during the referendum that left over 750 people injured, he did say the Spanish Government must work with the Catalonian people in order to bring about a peaceful resolution saying violence doesn’t solve anything.

Mr Varadkar said even though the people of Catalonia made the hard decision to express their desire for independence, the result cannot be ratified as figures have suggested less than half of the regions population took part in the vote.

He added: “We (Ireland) will not recognise this referendum as it went against the constitution of Spain, a constitution we support as Spain is our ally and a good friend.”
