Spanish Prime Minister dissolves Catalonia’s parliament and sacks chief of the local police force

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has this evening dissolved the Catalonian parliament and sacked the chief of the Mossos, the local police force.

The move follows the unilateral declaration of independence by Catalonia earlier on today.

It has been a historic day full of drama and tense situations on both sides, as neither government is now willing to recognize the other. Rajoy has provisionally called for a local election in Catalonia on December 21. An interim government formed by ministers handpicked by Rajoy will assume ruling duties, a move which is likely to inflame tensions even further.
