Sri Lanka bans the burka following Easter Muslim terror attacks

In the aftermath of the Easter Sunday bombings in which Muslim terrorists murdered hundreds of Christians the Sri Lankan government has moved to ban the burka.

President Maithripala Sirisena announced he was using an emergency law to impose the restriction that would ban most forms of face covering in public which came into effect on Monday.

The ban is specifically aimed at prohibiting people from disguising their identity and while the niqab and burka worn by Muslim women were not specifically named it is widely perceived that these garments were the target of the new law.

At least 250 people were killed in the Easter attacks and several more have died in the gun battles and subsequent suicide bombings as authorities crackdown on Muslim terrorists in the country.

Around 10% of Sri Lanka’s population of 21 million people are Muslim but wearing the full-face veil is uncommon amongst Muslim women in the country.
