Starbucks pay €12,000 to customer after employee drew “slanty eyes” on her coffee cup

A Starbucks store in Dublin has been ordered to pay €12,000 in compensation to a customer of Thai descent after an employee drew what was described as a slanty eyes on the woman’s cup.

According to RTE, the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) Adjudication Officer Kevin Baneham ordered Atercin Liffey Unlimited which is trading as Starbucks Tallaght to pay the woman, named Suchavadee Foley a sum of €12,000.

He came to the conclusion that Foley had been racially harassed under the Equal Status Act when she visited the Starbucks premises on January 12, 2020.

According to RTE, Baneham said it was undisputed that a Starbucks employee drew a picture of a smile and so-called slanty eyes on the woman’s cup.

Baneham said that the cup clearly was a reference to the woman’s race with Starbucks have to pay the woman €12,000 over the incident.
