Stark indictment to the failed Government seeking re-election: Number of homeless children almost doubles in a year

Despite all the pre-election promises, despite the facetious ‘Let’s keep the recovery going’ slogans, and despite all the empty figures being thrown around, a deep and inescapable shame hangs off this failed Government’s neck.

Official figures released today reveal that the number of homeless children nearly doubled during 2015, from 865 in 401 families in January 2015, to 1,709 children in 813 families in November of the same year.

This fact alone, if nothing else, should mean that the current Government must not be re-elected under any circumstance.

The highest number of homeless families was registered in the capital. In the month of November, there were 1,466 children in 705 families. This figure stood at 780 homeless children in 359 families in Dublin at the beginning of 2015, an increase of 87 per cent over the year.

Widespread condemnation has befallen on the Government for the utter contempt that they have shown for their citizen’s plight, while looking after their own nests and focus on their own re-election into power above all else.
