A state of emergency has been declared in Louisiana in the United States, as tropical storm Barry gathers strength.
Large swathes of Louisiana are now being lashed by strong winds and heavy rains, with thousands of homes already without power. The storm’s center is expected to make landfall later today.
Local meteorological services are also warning of the possibility of tornadoes developing as the weather system moves ashore, prompting fears of severe damage to certain areas.
