Large areas of the country have seen a great deal of snow throughout the day today, prompting Met Eireann to warn about a return of overnight freezing conditions, and raising the specter of black ice once again.
A status yellow weather warning remains in place today, as most parts of the country have experienced serious snow showers.
The regions of Connacht and Ulster have been the worst affected. Accumulations of several centimetres of snow are expected there overnight.
Roads are likely to remain treacherous during the evening, and specially overnight and tomorrow morning. Motorists are advised to drive with extreme care.
Wintry showers are expected to continue for the remainder of the week, and into the weekend.
