Stephen Donnelly gets massive job as he’s named non-exec director at lottery firm

Stephen Donnelly has been appointed as a non-executive director of Premier Lotteries Ireland, the operator of the National Lottery.

Premier Lotteries Ireland said Mr Donnelly brings “extensive experience” in areas including public policy, healthcare reform and complex systems design, while also highlighting his analytical and strategic expertise, reports RTE.

“He brings a unique combination of deep public policy experience, strategic insight, and analytical rigour, built across both government and international consultancy,” said National Lottery chief executive Cian Murphy.

“His perspective will be invaluable and will join a diverse and experienced board of Irish and international directors, whose collective expertise will help guide this important State asset through the second half of its Licence and strengthen the contribution we make to Good Causes across Ireland”, reports RTE.

Last year, Mr Donnelly joined British healthcare consultancy firm Carnall Farrar (CF) as a partner after failing to retain his seat as a Fianna Fáil TD in the 2024 General Election.

Mr Donnelly was first elected to the Dáil in 2011 as an independent TD representing Wicklow, reports RTE.

In 2015, he helped establish the Social Democrats and served as co-leader alongside TDs Róisín Shortall and Catherine Murphy before being elected under the party’s banner in 2016.

He resigned from the Social Democrats in 2017 before joining Fianna Fáil later that year, reports RTE.

Mr Donnelly was elected as a Fianna Fáil TD in 2020 and served as Minister for Health throughout the lifetime of the 33rd Dáil, but lost his seat in the 2024 election.

Before entering politics, Mr Donnelly worked as a consultant with McKinsey & Company, reports RTE.
