Stephen Kenny says he’s confident he’ll remain as manager following Euro 24 qualifying campaign

Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny says he expects the FAI European Championship qualifying campaign to be disappointing but expects him to stay in the post, reports RTE.

Greece beat the Boys in Green home and away to win 2-0 in the final leg of Ireland’s Euro 2024 qualifiers at the Aviva Stadium.

Kenny’s record in competitive matches currently stands at just five wins from 27 matches and he is just three points ahead of Gibraltar ahead of Monday’s meeting with international minnows.

Kenny’s current contract will run as long as Ireland are “active involvement” in the Euro 2024 tournament, FAI chief executive Jonathan Hill said last month, adding that his review will be presented at the end of the campaign.

Asked how the FAI would feel about the qualifying results, he told RTE Sport: “I’m sure they will be disappointed. I’m not naïve enough to suggest otherwise,” reports RTE.

After first-half goals from Giorgos Giacomakis and Giorgos Masouras, the manager rejected suggestions of a flat performance from his players after the break.

“I thought we played well in the second half at times,” he said. “The crowd were obviously flat as we were 2-0 down and I understand that,” reports RTE.

“It wasn’t a vanity project bringing in all these players. It had to be done. Who were the alternatives? There was a massive gap between players that were 31, 32 and 21. And a lack of talent in that age bracket,” reports RTE.
