The national forecaster has confirmed that the Red Weather Alert is now in place until 9am on Saturday.
Further heavy snowfalls are forecast overnight, as freezing temperatures remain.
Tomorrow, Saturday, is expected to be a brighter, relatively milder day, with temperatures reaching 5-6C in places.
