Stress is a factor: Almost 60 gardai have retired over the past 4 years due to medical reasons

Over the past four years, nearly 60 members of An Garda Síochána have been forced to retire due to medical reasons, reports Breaking News.

These cases have involved physical injuries suffered while on duty, serious mental health issues, and other long-term illnesses.

Out of the 57 members who left on medical grounds between 2020 and 2023, 24 were discharged last year, which is the highest number since 2020 when seven officers left due to health reasons, reports Breaking News.

In 2022, 18 members were medically discharged, while only six left in 2021.

An Garda has released these figures under FOI and also stated that they paid out more than €2.7 million in temporary rehabilitation remuneration (TRR) over the past four years, reports Breaking News.
