Strict new drink driving laws which will see first time offenders being heavily punished have been officially passed in the Seanad today.
Under the new laws which will come into effect upon the approval of the President Michael D Higgins, will now see first time offenders being automatically banned if they are caught drink driving.
The Bill which was overwhelmingly passed in the Seanad this afternoon will also see car owners being heavily punished of they allow a learner driver to use their car unaccompanied.
Although the Bill faced strong opposition in recent weeks, it is understood the legislation went through the Seanad with little opposition this afternoon.
It is expected the new laws will be implemented quickly with President Higgins expected to sign them into law within the coming weeks.
