Strike action could very well be on the horizon at the nations schools in coming months ahead after the Teachers Union of Ireland overwhelmingly rejected the new public service pay agreement on Thursday.
The union who represent post primary school teachers and third level university lecturers across the country reportedly rejected the deal by a margin of 87% to 13%.
Although no official industrial action plans have been announced the nations schools and colleges could very well face disruption in an attempt to force through a deal that meets the requirements of all three teachers unions.

It is understood all three unions including The Irish National Teachers Organisation and the ASTI are all in agreement that the new pay proposals fall short in a number of areas especially when it comes to lower pay for newly recruited teachers.
The latest pay rejection comes after the INTO rejected the deal last month, whilst the ASTI will ballot its members in October.Â

If the ASTI vote in favour to reject the deal the threat of industrial action could very well loom as the TUI have already balloted on the issue which has seen its members vote in favour of such industrial action by a margin of 81% to 19%.
