The Cabinet is to seek approval today to introduce legislation to establish supervised injecting facilities for drug users predominantly in the capital.
The aim is to provide a controlled environment under the supervision of health professionals for drug addicts who, they say, would otherwise inject on the streets, leaving them prone to overdose, infection or fights.
The first of these pilot drug drop in centres is due to be opened in Dublin city centre in the autumn.
The idea is to stop overdoses and to stop people using in public areas such as the boardwalk area on the quays.
