Tánaiste: “I am not in the slightest bit worried about the Fine Gael party eating into our vote at the next general election”

The Tánaiste Joan Burton has said that she is not in the slightest worried about the Fine Gael party eating into her vote in the next general election.

Ms Burtons comments come after she recently revealed that she will be actively campaigning to introduce a new structure that will see would be parents being given three months of additional paid parental leave. The Labour party leader also said tha she welcomed moves by the Fine Gael party to adopt a number of Labour-style policies in the run up to the election.

It is widely believed that Fine Gael will consider plans to pay an increased wage to the unemployed after they take on work but Ms Burton said she is not at all worried about Fine Gael’s strategy to gain voters, saying: “No, I absolutely welcome Fine Gael so clearly demonstrating that they favour the minimum wage.” “They favour regular increases in the minimum wage and of course their position is slightly different to ours, in that we want to actually see a move over a period of time, initially on a voluntary basis, to a living wage.”
