Tanaiste Leo Varadkar believes criminal charges will not be taken against him

In a live radio interview with LMFM, Michael Reade, the LMFM radio presenter asked Fine Gael leader, Leo Varadkar if the DPP directs that charges are brought against him, if he believed it would be in the national interest to step aside while the matter is determined?

Mr Varadkar responded:
“I don’t contemplate that happening.”

When pushed for clarification by the radio interviewer Mr Varadkar expressed his belief that criminal charges will not be taken against him.

The majority of people polled this weekend believe Mr Varadkar should step aside pending the outcome of the criminal investigation currently being carried out by the Gardai. This case is seen as a test of the independence of Ireland’s justice system when dealing with political figures.
