February or March looking the most likely for new Bank Holiday

The Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has suggested that the new Bank Holiday to honour frontline staff and those who we sadly lost during the Covid-19 pandemic could occur in either February or March.

Speaking to RTE, the Tanaiste suggested that the new Bank Holiday could be on February 1st to coincide with St Brigid’s Day.

Although November was originally suggested, Varadkar said that it would be a lot of work to introduce a new Public Holiday so soon given that employers and companies would have to plan for it.

The Tanaiste also suggested that there could be a four day weekend on St Patrick’s Day if the Bank Holiday is not introduced on February 1st.

He added that the Government will engage with employers and unions before any date is chosen.
