The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has made an announcement regarding the upcoming same-sex marriage referendum, in the announcement the Taoiseach says allowing marriage for same-sex couples is “the right thing to do” and would send a strong message to the world.

Mr Kenny believes that by passing a referendum on marriage rights  would be a strong signal that Ireland was a compassionate nation. Mr Kenny made the announcement whilst speaking at the end of Fine Gael’s two-day conference in Castlebar this weekend. The Taoiseach made the statement live on TV and said  that the issue facing voters was clear. Mr Kenny said: “In Downing Street some time ago, Ireflected on the work for Ireland carried out by Michael Collins.

He went onto say: “Let me leave you there for this evening by paraphrasing his words which he uttered during the Treaty negotiations ‘Give us a future, we’ve had enough of the past. Give us back our country, to live in, to grow in and to love’.”

The referendum on same-sex marriage is due to be held on Friday May 22nd.
