The company will be building two new data centres as part of a global €1.7bn investment, one of them to be located in Athenry, Co. Galway.

The new facilities, which are expected to begin operating sometime in 2017, will power Apple’s online services, including the iTunes and Apps stores.

The buildings will run entirely on clean and renewable energy, and will include designs with additional benefits for their communities.

The Athenry project will also provide an outdoor education space for local schools, and a walking trail for the community.

Apple Chief Executive has said that “this significant new investment represents Apple’s biggest project in Europe to date. We’re thrilled to be expanding our operations, creating hundreds of local jobs and introducing some of our most advanced green building designs yet.”
